Designer Thomas Jayne’s instant heirloom would shine in a powder room.
“There’s a long tradition of looking glasses, first because they were so useful and now because most everyone likes looking at themselves,” says interior designer Thomas Jayne of New York-based Jayne Design Studio. “Having mirrors in an interior always adds dynamic reflection and interest to a room in a way few other materials can.”
When tasked by the VERANDA team to share his idea of an instant heirloom—a new piece he deems worthy of passing down to the next generation—Jayne selected a looking glass that blends utility with vanity: the Gracie Flower Wall Mirror from 1st Dibs. A delicate vine of brass blooms adorns the circular frame; the sculpture flowers feature alternating centers of small lightbulbs, emeralds, and rubies. Read on for why Jayne believes this statement piece will stand the test of time.
“It has many qualities of great design: a beautiful shape, a wonderful organic texture, novelty, and a little humor. It makes you smile and is the kind of piece you’d be happy looking at every day,” says Jayne.
“One client asked us to turn her basement into a disco, and she wanted a fantastical mirror in the disco’s accompanying powder room. This is what the wheels of design at Jayne Design Studio landed on. The little gems in the center flowers felt appropriate for a glamorous room,” says the designer. “The flowers have a flattering ring of lights in center of many of the buds, so it works particularly well for a bathroom. It’s a non-conventional vanity mirror.”
“There’s a long history of making celebrated frames for mirrors. As soon as makers could create sheets of glass big enough to polish, they started making beautiful versions. Every century after the Renaissance had great looking mirrors, and this is part of that great continuum. They’ve naturally taken fanciful forms over the years. This one is from the 21st century but looks like it could be old,” adds Jayne.
